Joe Mantua of the F/V Haida Queen and F/V Haleakala has been fishing since he could walk. And it's no wonder when you look at his family tree. Joe's great grandfather Harold Ames Sr., his grandfather Harold Ames Jr., his uncle Jerry Ames and cousins Stan and Steve Carpenter all fish. The Ames/Carpenter/Mantua clan of Bodega Bay, California is the stuff legends are made of.
Joe when to college, but soon decided the ocean is where he wanted to be. Joe loves the freedom of fishing. Like all fishermen, he has an independent streak that keeps him going in good times and bad. Joe has fished for Dungeness crab, California king salmon, albacore and herring.
Ever increasing regulations have led Joe to look outside of fishing to make a living. Together with his dad, he purchased a ranch in Oregon and in the summer farms oat hay and alfalfa. When Joe is not working, he enjoys hunting and reading up on agricultural practices.
